Day 4 of 7

Day 4 of 7

Let the Obstacle Train You

Every difficulty you're facing is training a specific virtue: patience, courage, humility, restraint. Today's lesson helps you name the one your current obstacle is asking you to develop, so the friction starts working for you instead of against you.

Have one real challenge in mind before you begin.

Listen first. Six minutes. The recap below is for afterwards.

Marcus Aurelius wrote: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” (Meditations 5.20.) The line gets quoted everywhere. Most people miss what it actually means. Every obstacle contains information about what to do next. The frustration you feel when something blocks you has a use, if you redirect it instead of letting it consume you.

The practice: identify one obstacle you’re currently facing. Something that’s frustrating you, blocking you, or draining your energy. Then sit with two questions: what skill is this obstacle asking me to build? And what’s the smallest move forward I can make today? One paragraph in your head, or on paper if it helps, is enough.

Day 4 done. Tomorrow: gratitude, but the harder kind.
